Amarnath Pilgrimage from Baltal and Neelgrath

The Amarnath Pilgrimage is a religious journey to the Amarnath Cave in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The cave is believed to house an ice stalagmite that is a manifestation of Lord Shiva. The pilgrimage is held every year in the summer months, and it is one of the most popular pilgrimages in India.

There are two routes that can be used to undertake the Amarnath Pilgrimage from Baltal and Neelgrath:

  • Baltal Route: This is the shortest route, and it is also the most popular. The journey takes about 3 days.
  • Neelgrath Route: This route is longer, but it is also more scenic. The journey takes about 4 days.

Baltal Route

The Baltal Route is the shortest route to the Amarnath Cave. It is 95 kilometers from Srinagar and 395 kilometers from Jammu city. The route starts at Baltal, which is situated at the bank of the Sindh River. The trek from Baltal to the Amarnath Cave is about 14 kilometers long. The trek is relatively easy, and it can be completed in about 3 days.

Neelgrath Route

The Neelgrath Route is the longer route to the Amarnath Cave. It is 84 kilometers from Srinagar and 384 kilometers from Jammu city. The route starts at Neelgrath, which is situated at the bank of the Sindh River. The trek from Neelgrath to the Amarnath Cave is about 16 kilometers long. The trek is more challenging than the Baltal Route, and it can be completed in about 4 days.

How to Reach Baltal and Neelgrath

Baltal and Neelgrath are well connected by road from Jammu and Srinagar city.

  • From Srinagar: Baltal is 84 kilometers and Neelgrath is 95 kilometers away from Srinagar Airport/ City and it takes around 2- 2.5 hours to reach by road. There is no alternate option to reach Baltal and Neelgrath except by road from Srinagar.
  • From Jammu: Baltal is 384 kilometers and Neelgrath is 395 kilometers away from Jammu Airport/ City and it takes around 13 hours to reach by road. There is an alternate option to reach Baltal and Neelgrath from Jammu. You can come by flight to Srinagar and from there you can reach by road.

Weather Condition and Average Temperature of Baltal and Neelgrath

The weather of Baltal and Neelgrath is cold and during winter you can see the heavy snow fall while during Amarnath Pilgrimage in June and July the temperature goes upto 20 degree centigrade.

For June, July and August the average day temperature is recorded as 15-20 degree C while lowest temperature is recorded as 2 degrees centigrade to 4 degrees centigrade.

Tips for Pilgrims

  • Plan your journey in advance and book your accommodation and permits in advance.
  • Carry all the necessary supplies, including food, water, and clothing.
  • Be aware of the weather conditions and dress accordingly.
  • Be prepared for the altitude sickness.
  • Hire a guide if you are not familiar with the area.
  • Be respectful of the local culture and traditions.
